Q: What does the story’s title and the following all have in common – Five-O, 4077, WJM, and 704 Hauser? Advice worth remembering came from my first real, pay for work boss, John Sherman. His exact words were, “As it relates to this job, you will either be fired, quit, die, or retire”. Since at 17 my ability to listen to adult information was still in its early development stage, my brain didn’t hear much past “be fired”. As time passed, and life began to fill in some of my empty spaces I finally got it. The truth is when it comes to employment there really are only four ways to end it. Note: After three years I “quit” for full time, adult work which seemed like a good idea at the time. Which brings me to the advice I gave my kids when asked about matters of the heart. Q: How do I know whether I should stay with number one or go with number two. Since I had both boys and girls my answer ultimately was gender neutral. A: If the choice is between one and two, go with number two. If number one was the right one, there would be no number two. And this naturally brings me to the common thread of my first question. Yes, they all come from a TV show - WKRP Cincinnati, Hawaii Five-O, 4077 MASH, WJM-TV Minneapolis (Mary Tyler Moore show), and 704 Hauser is the address where Archie and Edith lived. Now my third gift of unsolicited advice. If you want a brief smile to lift you up when things are going south, Google a TV show from your earlier days, and listen to their intro theme music. You might even want to go to a place where everybody knows your name. Moral: We all can remember those happy days. |
