One Rule
A good friend has what she calls her One Rule - “Whatever happens is the only thing that could happen”. While avoiding theological reasoning altogether, she intentionally proclaims herself an “atheist”, to avoid conversations in which she has no interest in. She readily admits her “Rule” is simply her way of dealing with life, “Without having to fret with “why”! - Did I mention she’s an artist? I’ve a brother-in-law, who also has One Rule - “All music is a reflection of God”. He loves playing, singing, listening, and talking about it with anyone who listens. The totality of his theological training consists of occasional Sunday sermons, and his thoughts about God begins and ends with music. - Did I mention he has played in a band for years? I also have a friend whose One Rule is - “You make a difference through your action, and not arguments”. She lives and breathes politics in everything from advocating for the local school board, to votes in the Senate, and she is quite open about her motivation. She understands the theological core of the Gospel requires her to act. - Did I mention virtually all of her many years of formal education occurred in Catholic schools? Three folks – a no God “atheist”, a God found “in music” guy, and an “action because of God” woman, who are all very different, and all great friends. - Did I mention my life is so much better having these great friends in my life. Which brings me to my One Rule - “This is the hand I’ve been dealt; I will enjoy it as best I can”. – Did I mention my Rule has evolved over my 78 years. Theologically speaking, I smile and say, “Thank you, God”. Moral: It’s good to know your Rule. |
