2022 November Superpower
We all have the “superpower” to make people feel good. Three examples of how I experienced it in my life might give you ideas about how to put this superpower to work in your life. 1) Being elected to be the 8th grade graduating class president. Fact: There’re 87,498 elementary schools (k-8) in the United States, and annually there are 87,498, graduating 8th grade class presidents. Being one of 87,498 may not seem special, but in 1960 I was given the gift of feeling “special”, when my 8th grade class used their superpower to elect me class president. 2) Being selected to be part of President Eisenhower’s burial detail. Fact: In May 1967 I joined the Air Force. Note: When you join the service, you only really volunteer once (at the beginning), and after that they rarely, if ever, ask again. Consequently, without being consulted, I was given an unexpected gift. Some unknown person exercised their superpower and put my name on the list to march in the President’s burial processional. Playing a unique, though admittedly small, role in a significant historical event still feels “special” today. 3) Being retained to serve as a person’s lawyer. Fact: I practiced law for 26 years and there are 1.3 million lawyers in the United States. Being one of 1.3 million is not very special. However, when a client would choose me represent them, their choice invariably brought me the gift of feeling “special” – which was a direct result of them exercising their superpower. Yes, being elected felt special, being chosen felt special, and so too did being hired as a lawyer. The common factor - it required the action of another person. We can’t use this superpower on ourselves. It only works when somehow, we learn another person thinks YOU are “special”. So be a gift giver. Use your superpower, brighten another person’s day, and to make the world a little bit better. Moral: Superheroes have superpowers. Use yours and smile. |
