First the background: This young doctor, which I had known for most of his life (young being late 30’s), had never married. He had finally met a woman that had captured his heart. They committed themselves to their relationship and over time began to live together. This had gone well and yet they had avoided the word marriage for several reason. She, having been married before, was not in a hurry to take her son into a relationship that was short term. He, on the other hand, was wise enough to know that instant family was a big step and not to be taken lightly. His mother shared the story.
Young doctor says to Mother, “We’re approaching 40, I love her and her son, and we’ve been living together for several years. While we don’t need a marriage license to seal our relationship, I have decided to ask her to marry me.” I am sure his mother was smiling when her son asks her, “What is the best way to do this?” She simply said, “You will find the right way”, and let it go. So without saying anything to his bride-to-be, he buys the rings and begins to search for the “proper” way to ask. He is looking for some truly memorable, romantic setting. Weeks past with nothing coming to mind.
Now the plot thickens. One evening while he is in the bedroom getting organized for the next day, the rings secretly hidden under his socks, his bride-to-be comes into the room and actually sees him holding a small jeweler’s box. Looking at the small box, and anticipating a question she really wants to say yes to, she asks, “What is in the box?” Our brave young doctor gets down on one knee and gently offers the closed box to her. With a nod and a smile he indicates that she should open it. Smiling she opens the box to find a beautiful pair of - cuff links. No one died that night.
Two weeks pass and this brave young professional has still not found that perfect way to ask for her hand. It is another evening of organizing, and as she enters the bedroom she sees yet another small jeweler’s box. This time she doesn’t say the words, but the look on her face suggests the question. Again our young doctor young man kneels smiles and gently hands her the box. This time she looks at him and says, “If this is another pair of cuff links …”
The wedding is planned for the summer.
