Hello All: Just a few of the things I learned from a cat named Friday. Enjoy, Doug
Cats Several years back a cat decided to allow us to feed her and pay her vet bills. With her decision to stay with us being made on a Friday, her family name became Friday. Friday chose to spend her life outside while using our back porch as a place to eat and occasionally hang out. She allowed us to provide for her needs, which included (under the right circumstances) gently scratching behind her ears. Which brings me to her favorite place to sleep - a box. This was not a fancy "buy it in the pet store" box. She preferred cardboard and the more well used the better. One day, while sitting on the back porch watching her sleep in her box, I understood you don’t need fancy to be comfortable. Which brings me to consider a few of the other things that Friday taught me. She taught me that there are times when size does matter. Example: Being small she could sit under our car when the neighbor’s big dog was out, and yet she was large enough to hunt the geckos that populated our yard. True wisdom is knowing the difference. Another thing Friday taught me was it’s okay to have favorites. Elaine was obviously her favorite person (actually mine too), and I’ve found that knowing my favorite food, friends, shoes, etc. doesn’t detract from the quality of non-favorites. Favorites just make everyday decisions less time consuming. The greatest lesson Friday taught me, however, came when she wanted attention. She did not like to be ignored! I say this was my greatest lesson because I realized that people, like Friday our cat, do not like to be ignored. I know in my head every person I encounter is special, but it takes practice to give them the attention they deserve. Moral: Cats are cool. |
