Change “When something evolves, everything around that thing evolves as well”, from Paulo Coelho’s book the Alchemist. Coelho’s book tells a great story about a young boy’s quest for his ultimate treasure, revealing the changes that take place in him and his understanding of the world around him. Note: As my beautiful science teacher bride reminds me, “Evolution is basically a word used to identify the concept of change over time”. Which brings me to the game of football. 50 years ago (in my twenties) the primary football offense focused on strong running backs. When strong passing offenses began to win games football evolved, and the era of the quarterback emerged. Football has now evolved again into the age of field goal kickers, and great last two minutes strategies. Observation: The football they use hasn’t changed nor has the number of players on the field. What has changed is the thinking about how to win the game. People, including coaches, players, trainers and others, focused on how to play better football. Yes, it is the thinking about how to win football games that caused the game to evolve (change over time). This leads me to share that I’ve passed two years of high school Spanish, two years high school of Latin, two years of college Spanish, two years of Seminary Greek, and completed volumes one and two of Rosetta Stone computer Spanish. I will also share that I’m not bilingual, despite my best efforts while living five years in a community where Spanish was spoken by many. Realizing languages is not my gift, caused my thinking to evolve. Yes, failing to be bilingual is not a character flaw, and this makes my life easier. Why? Because asking bilingual folks for help now comes easy, and yes, they freely do help. Moral: Evolve - think and change. |
